Wood Chips
Wood chips are larger pieces of wood that are produced as a byproduct of wood processing, such as sawing, chipping, and milling. Unlike sawdust, which is composed of the smallest pieces of wood, wood chips can range in size from small pieces the size of a fingernail to larger pieces several inches long. Wood chips can be used as a fuel source for heating and generating electricity, as a raw material for making paper and other products, and as a landscaping and gardening product. In landscaping, wood chips are often used as a mulch to help retain moisture in soil and reduce weed growth, and they can also be used as a substrate for growing mushrooms. Wood chips can also be used as a feedstock for the production of biofuels and chemicals, such as cellulosic ethanol.
